This Homemade Eczema Cream is one of the ways I love using essential oils in our home. Essential oils can be used in so many ways and when you educate yourself on how to use them, they can become beneficial for your family.
Best DIY Homemade Eczema Cream with Essential Oils
Our oldest daughter has always suffered from food allergies, which also causes her to have bad reactions to eczema on her body.
Since she was a little girl we have used every lotion, soap, and shampoo brand you can think of.
We have paid anywhere from a few dollars to $40 creams for her.
As first-time parents, we were so lost on how to help her eczema feel better, but after years of looking and trying different brands I ended up making my own cream at home with essential oils that helped soothe her skin.

What is Eczema?
Eczema is known as atopic dermatitis and it’s basically a skin condition that can happen in children and even adults.
The skin becomes itchy, red, and dried. Some times it’s so severe that drastic changes such as eating habits and daily routines need to be taken.
Atopic means that there is a chance that the person with eczema could, later on, inherit some type of asthma, allergy, or hay fever as well.
In our personal experience, our daughter has had eczema since she was born.
We were told by our doctor that it is hereditary (I have eczema and asthma) and it is also caused by her food allergies.
When she eats certain foods like spicy, acidic, or allergic to she has bad eczema and allergic reactions.
What Causes Eczema?
Eczema is usually caused hereditary and it is found in people who suffer from some type of allergy or asthma.
In our daughter’s case, it’s caused by her food allergies, things she eats, and sometimes the products she uses.
Her skin is very sensitive and can break out easily if we are not careful with using products that have perfumes.
Even the chlorine in the pool makes her break out into eczema patches.
How Do You Find Out If You Suffer From Eczema?
My biggest advice would be to see your doctor first. Most likely you will be referred to either a dermatologist or an allergist.
Sometimes what you might think is eczema might also be a skin reaction or allergic reaction.
They look very similar but are different. For our daughter, an allergic reaction looks more like a rash, while her eczema looks more like acne.
Make sure you see a professional when it comes to your health and skin. Making this eczema cream with essential oils might help, but there might be something else going on too.
Don’t take the risk. See a professional as soon as you can.
What Can You Do To Keep Eczema Under Control?
Well… like I mentioned above we have used numerous things to help control it, including prescribed cortisone, but those had negative effects on her skin turning the area lighter than her natural skin color.
My husband and I decided that unless it was extremely necessary (and sometimes it has been), then we will try to take a more natural approach to our daughter’s eczema.
Although the essential oils will not heal her eczema, it helps her skin feel a bit better and relieved.
The worst part we seem to find is the itching and irritation it makes her feel. Finding something that helps her instantly is our goal!
Ingredients For Essential Oils Eczema Cream
There are so many brands that you can easily pick up at the store and online nowadays to create this eczema cream.
Personally, I prefer to order our oils online and then pick up the rest of the ingredients at the store, but Amazon is a great resource as well.
- Coconut Oil
- Cetaphil or a safe cream you use already on eczema
- Melaleuca essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Tinte glass jar (not plastic)
- Spoon
- Measuring cup
Note: Personally the brands I trust the most when using high-grade essential oils are Young Living, Doterra, and Revive.
You can easily purchase Young Living and Doterra from Amazon. I shared my favorites below.
Revive has its own website and it’s my new go-to essential oils website. The brand is just as fantastic as Young Living, but the cost is a lot cheaper because there is no middle person selling!
How To Make Homemade Eczema Cream
Making your own eczema cream using essential oils is a lot easier than you may think.
The most important part is to make sure that all of your areas, containers, and hands are fully clean.
You don’t want to pass any type of bacteria into the cream you will be putting on your skin.
- In a tinted glass jar or glass bowl add about 1/4 of your cream and 1/4 of the coconut oil. Coconut oil will be hard in cold temperatures and oily when it’s warm.
- Using a spoon whip the two together.
- Add 20 drops of Melaleuca essential oil and 20 drops of Lavender essential oil. The Melaleuca will help with the itching and the Lavender will help with healing.
- Mix everything together well and you will get a nice smooth consistency whipped cream.
Tip: Make sure to use a glass jar and not plastic when using essential oils.
Remember, this eczema cream has coconut oil, so the consistency will change according to the temperature you keep it in.
Why Use Glass And Not Plastic With Essential Oils
There are two reasons that you should be using a glass container when storing essential oils.
The first is that undiluted essential oils have some properties that will break down the plastic, which can destroy the oil and often cause leakage.
The second reason to get a tinted glass container is that the sun’s UV rays can increase the temperatures of the essential oil and cause deterioration to the quality of the oils.
So storing pure essential oils in a tinted or colored glass container is highly recommended.
Colored containers, like cobalt blue and amber-tinted glass, reflect the sun’s rays and protect oils when stored.
I didn’t know this when I made the first batch of eczema cream, but since then have purchased the cobalt blue glass and spray bottles.
If you notice, all pure essential oils will come in a tinted glass bottle.
The first thing our daughter told me when we first applied the cream was “thank you, mommy, it stopped itching”.
My heart just filled up with joy, knowing that I made something that is working for her!
As parents, all we want is to see our children happy and not suffer.
I’m so grateful to have found how amazing essential oils are and all the uses they are great for.
Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I love this idea, too! I recently made my own laundry detergent as well as homemade baby wipes ….. do you think this would be good for just plain old dry skin? Or is this specifically for eczema?
abccreativelearning says
I definitely would love to make my own detergent and baby wipes, please share the links so we can check them out!! Absolutely!! I’ve been actually using it myself and love the smell of it! Plus, I can definitely tell a difference on my hands after I apply it on the girls after bath time.

This is great! We make all of our own bath and body products. I’ve been wanting to try something for my 16 month old daughter. We’re VERY weird about what we put on her as a lot of mainstream brands have a bunch of unnecessary chemicals. Anyways, she’s been getting dry, red splotches on her legs, so I may have to try this out!
abccreativelearning says
Hi Alicia! I’m hoping to start making more and more of our own bath and body products now that I’m really into my essential oils 🙂 Just like you I’m very picky about what I buy and let my girls use on themselves. I absolutely love this! Also, one thing I didn’t mention in the post is that because it contains lavender it’s great to put on after bath right before bed! My girls have both been going straight to sleep after I apply on them. Yay 😉
Deborah says
Thank you for posting this. I will try this for my son. Plain coconut oil has helped him a lot, but I will try adding these ingredients too.

When I discovered coconut oil for me own skin (at 43!) I couldn’t believe how great it was!!! I wish I had used it sooner. My boys don’t like the smell of it. They might like your recipe with the essential oils and diluting a bit with a moisturizer. Does anyone complain of any stinging or burning from the Melaleuca oil? Great recipe! I’ll be trying it. 🙂
Emma @ P is for Preschooler says
I’m so glad you found something that worked for your daughter! I had eczema when I was a kid and certainly could have used this!
Ashley says
Will have to keep this on hand in case my daughter has a flare up. Doesn’t happen too often any more, but you never know!
Jessica says
I’ve been using this same concoction for 7 years on my daughter. It’s nice to see someone else doing the same and it working. Most thought I was crazy using Melaleuca oil. It has always worked for us.
abccreativelearning says
Wow, that’s awesome Jessica! Yes, I get the same thing. But as long as it works on our little ones, that’s all that matters 😉 It’s amazing stuff!
Patrick says
Nice post. I learn something new and challenging on blogs I stumbleupon on a daily basis.
It’s always interesting to read articles from other authors and practice something from their websites.
Phanessa says
What size Jar is that? And when you say 1/4 of the oil & 1/4 of the cream… is that filling 1/4 of the jar? Cause that would only be half the jar, right? But your picture shows a full jar. Does it matter? I just want to make sure I use the right amount of essential oils to cream/oil. My boys have such bad eczema, I’m looking for alternative relief. Thx!
abccreativelearning says
Hi Phanessa! Yes, you are measuring 1/4 cup of coconut oil and then 1/4 cup of whichever lotion you use or the one we use is Cetaphil. The mason jar is 4 oz. I attached a link so you can see 🙂 I usually make double the recipe just because we go through it so much. Hope your boys feel better and keep me posted on how it works for them!
Meleanie says
I am looking to make something for a group of nuns to help address both eczema and dry scalp issues. Can this be used on the scalp and will it help that as well?
Thanks!
abccreativelearning says
Hi Meleanie! I haven’t tried it on the scalp, but coconut oil alone is great for the hair and scalp. I really don’t see why you couldn’t use it, but I would double check before hand.
Dena Knight says
My daughters both have eczema and food allergies. Because of their nut allergies I am afraid to use coconut oils…..any other suggestions as to another oil to use in place of it?
Thanks,
Dena
abccreativelearning says
Hi Dena! You can definitely use any type of carrier oil. You could also use olive oil or sunflower oil, which are great for the skin too. Check out this post I wrote about the different types as well 🙂 https://simplytodaylife.com/best-carrier-oils-to-use-with-essential-oils/
Hope this helps!
Michelle says
Do you warm the coconut oil at all or does it jus whip?
abccreativelearning says
Hi Michelle! The coconut oil just whips up really good. It will harden again once you let it sit in the jar if there is cool temperatures 🙂

Sharon Low ( Malaysia) says
Hi, thanks for the sharing. I’m making for my kids eczema. I seem not able to whip the cream to a smooth consistency. Is it ok? I used a handheld but still not able to whip it to smoothness.
abccreativelearning says
Yes, as long as it’s smooth enough to spend on their skin you should be just fine 🙂
Sharon Low ( Malaysia) says
Thanks. I can see slight improvement in my kid’s eczema after applied. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
abccreativelearning says
Oh, I’m so glad!
Susan says
OMG!! So glad for the eczema post. I made this tonight. I’m hoping it will support healthier skin when my eczema flares up.
I developed this pesky itch when teaching school. I was always using hand sanitizer. Now I have to keep my hands out of almost everything even dishwater.
I have also developed seasonal allergies as I get older. I am learning how to support my body systems using Young Living Essential Oils. I wish I had known about them earlier in life but at least I have my 24 year old daughter using them.
Victoria says
Oh, I’m so glad! I hope this helps! Yes, I love my essential oils!
Lily Richins says
Thank you for the recipe. I made 1/2 recipe 2 days ago, I think it works on my 2yr old, I haven’t seen him scratching much. We had been using the prescription steroid, and to the point that I have to put it on the wider and wider area, so I really hope this is the solution.
One thing that I noticed though, the lotion kind of separating after it sits for a while, do you have any tip for that, and do you think it will be good for the diaper area?
Thank you so much again.
CGM says
Hi, Thanks for posting this cream. I will try on my son. Is Melaleuca essential oil the same as tea tree ?
thanks
Victoria says
Hi! Yes, it is.
Heather says
I made some of the eczema cream yesterday and I noticed this morning that the cream separated a bit. Is there anything g I can do?
Victoria says
Hi Heather! You can either add more lotion/cream to the mixture to add a thicker consistency, but the separation is normal. It does become a bit runny, so mixing it before use works too. You can also add it to your refrigerator if you would like. It will solidify because of the coconut oil but will soften once you have some in your hands.
Amanda says
Would aveeno lotion be ok to use?
Victoria says
Yes, I would use whichever lotion works best with your skin and won’t irritate it.
Jan H says
For some reason I can’t download the recipe. My granddaughter has such a tough time , I would love to try it for her. Is there any other way to get this recipe ??
