Helping Your Kids Sleep Better At Night

Create a predictable bedtime routine –

Make sure your kids know what is going to happen each night at bedtime. This helps them know the routine and get use to it, so their bodies will adjust easily when that time comes each day. Things like night time baths, reading at bedtime, prayers, and hugs before sleep are important for kids to feel settled in for the night of sleep.

Put them to sleep earlier –

Many children struggle to stay asleep because they are overly tired. Start putting your kids to bed a bit earlier each evening until they settle into a good routine of getting 9-10 hours of sleep. When they are too tired they will be more prone to fighting sleep. By putting them to bed a bit earlier it will help them to get the sleep they need and make bedtimes and sleep better at night.

Turn off the television an hour before bedtime –

Distractions like television, game systems, and even loud music can all make it tough for your kids to settle down and relax at bedtime. Turning off these things an hour before bedtime can help their brain relax and allow them to fall asleep easier. Instead of watching television before bed, send them to their room with a book.

Give them comfort –

Some kids are afraid of the dark, and others may have separation anxiety. Provide them with comfort while keeping things to a minimum. Add a night light to their room if needed. Give them a blanket, or another soothing item that will help them to feel comforted. These little things can go a long way toward helping them settle and self soothe back to sleep should they wake up in the night.

Eliminate drinks and food before bedtime –

Not only can drinks at bedtime result in accidents, food can keep them awake easily. Feed them dinner at an early enough hour that they can easily relax for sleep. No bedtime snacks or last drinks of water helps them sleep better overnight.

Use aromatherapy –

Soothing scents like lavender, chamomile, or vanilla have long been known to help you relax for sleep. Using an essential oil diffuser or even some scented lotion on their body before bed can definitely help them relax and be more prepared to easily fall asleep.

My girls have their own diffuser in their room and every night I add a few drops of lavender or roll it on the bottom of their feet. It makes a huge difference.

Adjust their bed and bedding –

Sometimes as parents we don’t think about how a bed will make a child feel at night. Just like our own bed can be uncomfortable, so can a child’s bed. Too heavy or not enough bedding can also keep them awake. Consider their physical comfort and adjust as needed.

These tips for helping your kid sleep better at night are sure to make a huge difference in the quality o sleep your entire family gets.
