Splitting Up Together Is A Must Watch On ABC | A Comedy That Couples Will Love
From the moment the first clip of Splitting Up Together started I knew that this was going to be a must watch and one of our newest favorite shows. When I mean ours, I mean my hubby and me. We all have our shows that we love watching on our own, but we also have those shows that we watch together. Splitting Up Together is going to be one of those shows!
I screened a few of the episodes of the newest ABC show premiering tonight at 9:30|8:30c after the premiere of Roseanne. I was also fortunate enough to be able to sit down with some of the cast, executive producer/creator Emily Kapnek, and executive producer Dean Holland.
About Splitting Up Together
Lena and Martin were once madly in love. But, like many marriages, time and circumstance eventually took their toll. Lena, the perfectionist, fell into the role of caretaker for everyone, including Martin. Martin felt he could never do anything right and gave up making the effort. This created a romantic rift between them.
Finding themselves in a platonic marriage and acting more like a pair of camp counselors wrangling their kids than a couple hopelessly in love, they decide that everyone’s lives would be better served if they got a divorce.
Still wanting the best for their three kids and facing a daunting real estate market, the couple decides not to sell their house and to “Birds Nest” instead. One parent will live in the house as the “on-duty” parent taking care of the kids, while the “off-duty” parent will live in the detached garage, doing whatever he or she pleases. They will switch off every other week.
One of the things that I love when being able to interview the cast and the minds behind a show is to get a sense of what they want audiences to take away from their creations. It gives us a more in-depth view of why the show is created and what we the audience should expect.
A Sensitive Subject… Divorce
The topic of divorce is the first personal topic that the show touches on and can be a very sensitive topic for many. The show has done an incredible job in showing how something negative can actually be something positive or at least show the positive sides of it.
Executive Producer and creator Emily Kapnek shared that she knows many friends who are living a similar divorce scenario. Co-parenting together as they raise their children is more common than we know.
Not a Show About Divorce?
If you think the show is about divorce and all the negativity that comes with it, then you need to watch. The show is more than just about divorce. It speaks to parents and couples who are raising a family. Touching on subjects that we have either experienced or can relate to. While watching the show I had moments where I was like “Oh my goodness that’s me!”. It’s bringing realness of family and couples to primetime. It’s a show about parents trying to make the right choices for their happiness and for their children. That’s why I know it’s going to be one of our favorite weekly shows to watch.
