Films have so many different elements when it comes to each of their creations, including what each character will be wearing. That is even more so for movies like A Wrinkle In Time. Today I have Costume Designer Paco Delgado Interview A Wrinkle In Time and how he created Outfits Fit For A Warrior. Thank you, Disney, for inviting me to attend the A Wrinkle In Time movie press event in LA.
Costume Designer Paco Delgado Interview A Wrinkle In Time | Outfit Fit For A Warrior
Every story is filled with importance, but these stories would be nothing if the costumes didn’t help with the story. That’s exactly what happens in A Wrinkle In Time. The costumes and clothes become apart of the story being told. Helping the audiences understand each characters interests, flaws, and where they are coming from.
One of the biggest things that stood out during screening A Wrinkle In Time was the beautiful costume designing. Each detail, which I was able to experience first hand at the press event, was so magnificent. Everything was thoroughly thought out, making sure that it made sense in the story at that specific moment. Costume designer Paco Delgado did a phenomenal job in creating the Mrs costumes to perfection.
Getting Inspiration From The Script
Costume designer Paco Delgado shared with us that his inspirations first begin by him reading the script. He wants to know all the details of the characters before beginning any design. This allows him to see what type of life or characters they will be. Making sure that costumes fit perfect for movements and scenes.
In A Wrinkle In Time he was working with characters who were Celestial beings, so for him, he wasn’t working on an ordinary character. He wanted their costumes to be just as amazing as the warriors that their characters were.
You already know, Oprah’s character has to be energy. She’s a warrior. Then, Reese is very playful. You see the way she engages with the children and the silly things that she says to the children. She has to be interesting and fun. Then Mindy speaks with quotes from books. She’s a super librarian of the universe. She has all the cultures of the universe in herself. Then we can draw things from every culture in the world, like Japanese, African prince, South American. This is the beginning.
The Designers Vision Is Not Always The Directors Or Actors
Paco Delgado shared with us that a designers job is come up with a vision, but that vision also has to match what the director of the film wants it to be perceived as. He said it’s more like a conversation between designer, director, and actors. He wants to create a vision that is perfect for the characters while making sure that the actors wearing the costumes love it as well.
We are adults and we can make our own minds on what to wear.
A Beautiful Vision Doesn’t Always Work Out
If you have watched the film A Wrinkle In Time then you will see all the details that went into creating the dresses for the Mrs. Costume designer Paco Delgado shared with us during his interview that many times they had to go back to the drawing board. Sometimes the fabric doesn’t work or they can’t find enough of it to complete the design. Some of the dresses took eight weeks to complete.
Mindy’s dress is filled with quotes from different languages and nationalities. Paco said that she wanted these details on her dress. Especially with the type of character she had who was intelligent and spoke in quotes.
