Screenwriter Jennifer Lee Interview A Wrinkle In Time | Adapting A Classic Novel

If you have young kids then you know of the Disney movie Frozen. Oscar-winning director and the writer of Frozen on Broadway Jennifer Lee took on the immense job of screenwriting A Wrinkle In Time. If you know the work that Jennifer Lee produces then you know that A Wrinkle In Time was a big undertaking. Especially when so many fans of the original book would be waiting on the other side to see the final product.

Bringing A Classic To Life

As an avid book reader when we see one of our favorite novels or stories brought to the big screen we expect big things. Especially with fantasy storylines that contain specifics and details we all love. Jennifer Lee knew she had a huge undertaking making sure that she stayed true to the story, kept the fans happy, but also bring in a bit of today’s issue into the story. She knew from the beginning she didn’t and wasn’t going to imitate the book.

If we try to be the book we’ll fail. But showing our love for the book, showing sort of how much inspiration there is in the book and how strong the journey is in the book. I could stay true to that, then we might have a chance of finally getting it made.

Creating A Modern Twist

We all know that A Wrinkle In Time a profound story of good vs evil, but the film touches on a lot of issues that kids are dealing with in life. Bringing to light a lot of the insecurities, darkness, and self-doubt we all have. Creating the storyline with this modern twist will allow kids to see themselves on the big screen.

Participate In The World

I grew up a kid who didn’t think much of herself. I had very little self esteem and spent a lot of time criticizing myself. A lot of times thinking I wasn’t good enough to do things. I would look at others and think, this is what you have to be. If I’d just said, you are fine as you are, just focus on what you’d want to do and how you want to participate in the world.

Participate in the world, you don’t have to be perfect.

Creating For Broadway Vs A Novel

Frozen was one of Disney’s biggest hits and still is. I mean, I loved the movie, but I was happy when my girls were ready to “Let It Go”! Jennifer Lee is currently working on her newest project, Frozen on Broadway. She shared that she was working on screenwriting A Wrinkle In Time just as the show Frozen was starting to come together on Broadway. For Jennifer is all about the storytelling. Whether she is doing an animation, live action, or a show on Broadway.

Storytelling is storytelling. And everything comes from the character, from the emotion. It doesn’t matter how fantastical the world or whether it’s just a tiny set. It all comes back to the intimacy of those characters.

About A Wrinkle In Time

Meg Murry is a typical middle school student struggling with issues of self-worth who just wants to fit in. The daughter of two world-renowned physicists, she is intelligent and uniquely gifted, as is Meg’s younger brother, Charles Wallace, but she has yet to realize it for herself.

Complicating matters is the mysterious disappearance of Mr. Murry, which has left Meg devastated and her mother broken-hearted. Charles Wallace introduces Meg and her fellow classmate Calvin to three celestial beings (Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Who) who have journeyed to Earth to help search for their father, and together they embark on their formidable quest. Traveling via a wrinkling of time and space known as tessering, they are transported to worlds beyond their imagination where they must confront a powerful evil force.

To make it back home to Earth, Meg must face the darkness within herself in order to harness the strength necessary to defeat the darkness rapidly enveloping the Universe.
