Deep Clean Your House with these Essential Oil Cleaning Recipes

Homemade Essential Oil Cleaning Recipes

Essential oils have many great properties, and quite a few of them are known for their cleaning abilities.

Cleaning naturally, and organically, are important to many families.

I love creating my own homemade house cleaners with essential oils, plus it’s a great way to get my kids to help clean around the house.

The smell of non-toxic chemicals and the fresh scent of essential oils is what brings me joy after cleaning our home.

There’s such a sweet and fresh scent smell that regular cleaners just don’t have.

Especially when using citrus-scented essential oils! It smells like you’re surrounded by trees of lemons and oranges!

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience (it means if you click on a link and make a purchase I will earn a small commission. It will not cost you a penny more).

Notes: I only recommend using high-quality therapeutic-grade Young Living Essential Oils, DoTerra, and Revive. These are not everyday oils that you can find at the store. This is also what has worked for me and my family, this is in no way to take away from what is suggested by your doctor or health care professionals. I am not a doctor and I am not promising any healing or medicinal advice. I just love therapeutic oils and love sharing how we use them at home. These statements have not been evaluated by the food and drug administration. Please, educate yourself before using essential oils in your home.

Homemade Bathroom Cleaner

There are so many ways that essential oils could be used in the home for cleaning.

The trick is to learn about how to use essential oils, which ones have cleaning abilities, and how to mix them to create cleaners.

These are my favorite essential oil cleaning recipes that I use or deep cleaning our home.

I’m going to share which essential oils I use and how I mix them.

Bathroom and Kitchen Cleaner

For us, the bathrooms can be the dirtiest of the home to clean with two tweens living in the house.

Plus, I’ll admit to all of you, the bathrooms are the one thing I do not like to clean.

In fact, I usually ask my husband to do it for me, but the good thing is he loves my natural bathroom cleaner just as much as I do.

I love this cleaner so much that it’s also the same one I use on my kitchen counters and appliances.

Homemade Spray Cleaner For Bathroom And Kitchen

  • 10 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
  • 5 Drops of Orange Essential Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons of Vinegar
  • Glass spray bottle

In a glass spray bottle, add in the lemon essential oil, orange essential oil, the vinegar, fill it up with water, and shake well.

Lemon Essential Oil is both antibacterial and antiseptic, which means it kills germs.

Spray this on bathroom or kitchen counters, stove, tub, toilet, and any other surface that needs to be deep cleaned.

Let it sit for about a minute and then wipe off.

Natural Bath Tub Scrub

  • 30 Drops of Lemon
  • 30 Drops of Peppermint
  • 1/2 Cup of Baking Soda
  • Glass jar with lid

In a glass jar add your baking soda, lemon, and peppermint.

Shake your jar to make sure that the essential oil has evenly spread to all of the baking soda.

Wet your tub surface or sink with warm water.

Sprinkle the essential oil scrub mix into your bathtub or sink.

Using a cleaning brush or washcloth clean your surface thoroughly.

I like to use this recipe if I need to scrub the tub, sink, and toilet a little bit more than just spraying and wiping.

Especially when there is toothpaste in the girl’s sink.

Homemade Essential Oil Floor Cleaner

Essential Oil Carpet Cleaner

  • 8 Drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 2 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil
  • 1/2 Cup Baking Soda
  • Glass jar with lid

In a glass jar add your baking soda, peppermint, and lemon essential oil.

Give the jar a nice shake to mix everything together.

For deep-set stains in the carpet, apply this solution and let sit for 3-5 minutes.

Sprinkle this mixture on the rest of your carpet and let sit for just a couple minutes before vacuuming up.

Peppermint Essential Oil is an antibacterial agent and will kill bacteria lingering in the carpet.

This is also great to sprinkle to windowsills and entryways to keep insects out.

Insects do not like that citrusy smell.

Homemade Essential Oil Floor Cleaner

When it comes to floor cleaners I have several favorite recipes.

Below is one of the ways to make a homemade floor cleaner and my second favorite is my Laminate Floor Cleaner.

Now that our new home has both laminate floors and tiles I can say that it works great on both types of floors.

Try both of them out and let me know which one is your favorite!

  • 5 Drops Orange Essential Oil
  • 5 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • Mop and bucket or Spray Mop

In a mop bucket, fill it up with warm water and add in Orange and Tea Tree Essential Oils.

I personally prefer to use a spray mop rather than a bucket.

It’s less messy and I am able to still control how much water I spray on the floor.

My only tip would be to make sure that you clean your plastic container thoroughly when finished mopping the floors.

You don’t want to leave any essential oil residue in the plastic container because it will eventually ruin it.

Orange Essential Oil helps to get cut through grease and Tea Tree Oil kills bacteria.

These two are perfect together as a deep cleaner for your floors.

Using Essential Oil In Washing Machine and Dryer

Did you know that you can safely use essential oil in your washing machine and even in the dryer?

When washing our clothes I like to use our regular non-scented detergent because of our daughter’s sensitive skin, but then I add a few drops of essential oil.

Washing Machine

  • 2 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • 2 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

To brighten up clothes, add both Lemon and Tea Tree Essential Oil to the wash cycle.

I also love to run a cycle without any clothes in it to deep clean our washing machine.

Especially after cleaning my mop pads and clothes after cleaning the house.

Add in a couple of drops of Peppermint Essential Oil when you do to help get rid of any lingering bacteria or mold.

Essential Oils In The Dryer

If you don’t want to add essential oil to your washing machine, you can definitely do it in your dryer as well.

One of my favorite ways to dry our clothes is by adding dryer balls and essential oils.

Here’s a great post I wrote on how to make your own dryer balls.

You can also purchase some great ones online and simply add drops of your favorite essential oils right on the dryer balls.

Add to your dryer and your clothes come out cleaner than ever.

Essential Oil Sanitizing Air Mist

My favorite way of keeping the air in our home as clean as possible is by diffusing my favorite sanitizing essential oils.

If you don’t own a diffuser a spray bottle will work perfectly as well.

  • 3 Drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • 1 Drop Tangerine Essential Oil
  • Water
  • Diffuser or Spray bottle

Mix both Lemon and Tangerine Essential Oils into a spray bottle with water or diffuser.

Mist the air for a natural air purifier or use a diffuser throughout the day.

I also love to spray this on my fabric couches to sanitize and freshen up.

This is perfect to use when family members are sick as it helps to rid airborne bacteria.

You can also use Thieves Essential Oils to kill airborne germs and it doesn’t have to be mixed with any other oils.

Thieves Essential Oil is my all-time favorite germ killer for sure!!!

Homemade Cleaning Recipes with Essential Oils

I love creating my own cleaning recipes for our home.

I can create recipes that also smell according to the season or my mood.

Lemon and orange essential oils are perfect for spring cleaning.

Add a bit of clover or thieves during fall and it smells like cinnamon!

The cleaning mixtures are endless and natural.

If you don’t know where to start with essential oils, send me an email with questions or to help you get started creating your very own homemade essential oil cleaning recipes!

In using the essential oils for your washing machine, do you put it up in the dispenser for laundry detergent and go through a wash cycle or do you put it straight into the tumbler?
