One of my favorite things to do after returning home from a movie event is to listen to the interviews. I miss so much of the details because I’m in the moment really listening to what our interviewees are saying. On this Exclusive Interview with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Director James Gunn and Marvel President Kevin Feige we learned a lot of how this adventure began and maybe even where it’s going.
I was invited by Disney to attend the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 press event in LA. This included an exclusive interview with Director James Gunn and President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige. All galactic opinions are my own.
Exclusive Interview with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Director James Gunn and Marvel President Kevin Feige #GotGVol2Event
We sat down and had a chat with both James Gunn and Kevin Feige, but not before they confided how much they enjoy spending time with us. James Gunn himself began the conversation letting us know that we are his favorite part and I quote him,
James: And this is my favorite part of making the Guardians movie is meeting with the Mommy Bloggers. You are real and not hollywoody.
Seriously, this interview couldn’t have started any better! I was proud to be among these group of ladies that so much have left a positive impact.
By the way, have you seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2? If you haven’t I suggest not reading any further until you do, there might be some spoilers in this interview and I don’t want to ruin this awesome movie for you! So, go see it NOW and then come back! If you have, then proceed reading.
When it comes to choosing the right songs for the movies, James Gunn starts off with a list of about 500 songs that he has chosen. From there he writes the script adding whichever song he believes would be the right fit. He says that the most request he gets on Twitter from fans is them suggesting songs for the movie.
James: Eventually it’s all basically baked into the organic story of what’s happening in a movie, in the same way you put, you know, sugar in a cake.
Kevin Feige filled us in that when he saw all of these song suggestions in Guardians Vol 1 he thought it was funny that James Gunn had all of these suggestions for songs. He never thought they would make it into the movie. As it turns out, every single song that James Gunn has chosen has made it into Guardians Vol 1 and Vol 2.
Kevin: So, I would listen to the song as I’m reading the outline, and then later the script. And that sort of pool of songs that he has comes in handy.
There’s a Guardians of the Galaxy theme park ride that is opening soon at California Adventure that features songs that James suggested as well, and a few other places coming up in the future.
I think lots of fans are waiting for that first kiss between Star-Lord and Gamora. The way things are going it doesn’t really looks like it’s going to happen or should it even happen. If we look at both characters you can tell that Peter is the more romantic of the two, but is Gamora even ready to share her feelings?
James: I don’t think that Gamora is a character who would be swept up in the moment by passion, and if she was, I think she would have to deal with the ramifications of that. I don’t think she would be easy on herself about it. And so I think at the end what we see between the two of them is such a truer love story. Where she loves him, and he loves her, and she acknowledges that at the end of the movie, but that’s a love that’s based not only on attraction but on a really deep friendship that the two of them have.
Kevin: It’s the difference between a truthful, emotional moment, and a Hollywood moment, and that was very savvy of James to navigate that.
Many Marvel fans now know that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be included in the cast of the newest Avengers movie, Infinity Wars. Fans want to make sure that the cross over is done correctly and carefully.
Kevin: I mean, as with all of the connectivity between our characters on various films, you have to be careful about it. I mean, we never want it to just seem like characters are popping their heads out of windows and saying “Hello” and then going back in.
If you have already watched the movie, then you know by now that there are a few surprises, cameos, and easter eggs to look out for. One of the most shocking ones for me was to find out that the voice of Mainframe is Miley Cyrus. Many of us laughed when James Gunn told us, but he was serious. So make sure to look for that at the end of the movie.
When it comes to choosing the right director for the job or the movie so to speak, it’s a lot of work and a lot of meetings. As Kevin Feige shared with us. When it came to James Gunn being chosen for the director of Guardians he first met with executive producer Jeremy Latcham and now executive producer Jonathan Schwartz.
Kevin: It’s a leap of faith, to some regard.
A great fact that we learned from James Gunn was that he’s pretty laid back when it comes to not being chosen for a job. When it came to working on Guardians it was quite different. This job he wanted and had it all laid out in his head.
James: I’m not sure everybody would have seen in Dave Bautista what I saw, or Pom Klementieff of what I saw. But in the same way, I think Kevin cast me. I gave Chris an opportunity, and Kevin gave me an opportunity.
And for the first time in my life, I really — I really wanted the Guardians of the Galaxy gig.
