Shredded Chicken In Slow Cooker
When it comes to making meals during the week I almost always reach for my slow cooker and chicken.
There are so many ways to use shredded chicken in recipes and cooking chicken in a crockpot is so simple.
When I create my weekly meal plan I make sure to look at my family calendar and create my menu based on how busy I will be.
If I know it’s going to be a week where I will end up in the drive-thru, then I make sure to create recipes using my slow cooker and shredded chicken.
It’s a great way to make your protein ahead of time, which is what usually takes the longest to cook.

Why Cook Chicken In Slow Cooker?
I don’t know about you, but I’m all about saving time when it comes to meal prepping during the week.
Our family has a busy schedule and I usually don’t have time to cook dinner until late at night.
That’s why I love making recipes in my slow cooker. Especially chicken!
My slow cooker allows me the freedom on the weekends to spend time with my family while part of my weekly meals is being cooked.
Here are some of the reasons I love cooking chicken in my crockpot:
- Allows for more family time
- I can cook family-friendly recipes
- Cook an entire pot of chicken ahead of time
- Cook recipes that will last all week
- Allows simple meal planning without stressing
- No need to be over the stove cooking all-day
- Chicken is cooked moist and easy to shred
- Create several recipes using shredded chicken
The Best Chicken To Use
When it comes to certain ingredients I am very picky.
Personally I prefer to purchase organic chicken the day before I am going to cook it.
I also recently started ordering my chicken online from Perdue Farms and having it delivered straight to my door!
Which has been such a time saver for my busy schedule these busy days.
Plus, for a limited time, Perdue Farms is offering its $121 Organic Chicken Bundle for only $49.99! So don’t miss this deal!
Ingredients Needed To Make Shredded Chicken
Making chicken in the slow cooker is much simpler than you think!
- 3-4 Skinless chicken breasts
- 3/4 cup of chicken broth
- Salt and pepper (you can also add garlic powder or other seasonings but my youngest doesn’t like it so I don’t add it)
Tip: You can always cook more depending on your meal planning for the week.
If I know I’ll be cooking chicken tacos and shredded chicken sandwiches then I will double the recipe.
This way I have enough shredded chicken for the entire week.
How To Cook Shredded Chicken
This recipe is pretty much a dump and go recipe to use all week long.
- Add your chicken breast, chicken broth, and seasonings to the slow cooker.
- Allow cooking for 2-3 hours on high or 4-6 hours on low.
- Once the chicken is completely cooked remove and shred.
- Scoop out 1/4 of a cup of the chicken broth and pour over shredded chicken to add flavor and moisture.
- Dump out the rest of the chicken broth.
- Add your shredded chicken back into the slow cooker if you want to keep warm.
Tip: If you don’t want to worry about making too much of a mess like me, then make sure to pick up some slow cooker liners.
They seriously are the best for keeping the crockpot as clean as possible.
How To Shred Chicken Easily
You can easily shred chicken two different ways depending on how much you are cooking.
If I’m making chicken for just one recipe I use two forks to shred and pull the chicken apart.
Sometimes I make enough chicken for several recipes in a week and that’s when I like to use my electric mixer.
Because I’m making a bigger portion and leaving the chicken broth in so it keeps the protein moisture throughout the week it’s easier to shred right in the crockpot or slow cooker.
Can I Store Chicken?
Absolutely! Which is why this recipe is perfect to make weekly in your home.
Store cooked shredded chicken in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days in your refrigerator.
If you like to meal plan for the month you can also certainly store your chicken in the freezer for 2 to 3 months.
This will certainly help with homecooked meals on the table faster and more frequently in your home.
