Last month I had the opportunity to share with you all some tips and tricks about Poison Prevention, so this month I want to expand a bit more with the Safe Kids Day.

You may not know this, but accidental injuries are the leading cause of death in a child. These are things that we would never expect to happen or that we thought our child knew better. You just never know when an accident will happen, but being prepared is highly important. This is why Nationwide launched Make Safe Happen in 2015 to empower parents, caregivers and children with tools and resources to make homes safer.

Sometimes it’s not the fact that the parent didn’t realize it, it’s just that the parent didn’t know any better and the accident could have been avoided if the parent had the proper tools or resources to educate themselves and those around them.

One of the biggies lately have been the furniture injury. Where a piece of furniture is not bolted to the wall and a child climbs up, tipping the entire thing over them. Getting the right information about poison prevention, water safety, fire safety, and furniture/television safety in front of parents will help to prevent these tragic accidents that occur way more than we actually know.

These are the reasons why Safe Kids Day was created. To bring together parents, families, and the community to talk about these situations, to support each other, and to celebrate their children. The nonprofit organization works on protecting children from accidental injuries, such as drowning, fires, burns, poisoning and traffic injuries by bringing all this information forward to those who need it most. To find a local event near you just visit the Safe Kids Day website. There you will also find a checklist of safety actions from a master checklist of activities with #MyHigh5. My High 5 makes it easy for parents to pick the safety actions that make the most sense for their family. Check out an example above.

They are providing Safety Kids Day is really providing you with everything you need to protect your child, to teach them and yourself how to be safer.

Nationwide and Safe Kids have developed a checklist related to four critical safety areas: TV and furniture tipovers, poisoning, drowning and fire. The checklist shares five easy steps that can help parents easily take actions to prevent accidental injuries for their children:

• Secure TVs and furniture to the wall using mounts, brackets, braces or wall straps to prevent tip-overs.

• Be attentive when your children are near water, including baths, hot tubs and pools. Teach them never to go near or into water alone – an adult should always be present.

• Install a smoke alarm AND a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home, including your basement, and place them near sleeping areas. Test both types of alarms monthly and replace batteries annually.

• Prepare a fire escape plan, and make sure your family knows what to do and where to meet in case of an emergency. Practice the plan twice a year – the goal should be to get out in under two minutes.

• Store household products like bleach, detergents, laundry packets, dishwasher liquid or cleaning solutions in their original containers, locked up and out of children’s sight and reach.

Here’s a short video telling you more about it.

As you think about ways that you can protect your children from accidental injuries, start by visiting the Make Safe Happen website and downloading the app. Both are resources that share age appropriate and room-specific tips to help prevent injuries.

What steps are you taking or will be taking to make sure that your children are safe?
