My girls and husband love any flavored cupcakes! In fact, if I allowed it they would eat cupcakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Cupcakes or donuts! Can you tell they have a sweet tooth?
Cinnamon rolls are one of my favorite treats and this recipe combines the best of two worlds if you ask me. They get their fair share of cupcakes and I get all the cinnamon roll flavor I love. It’s also a great recipe to create if you want your home to smell like fall.

Don’t let the number of ingredients below make you leave and not try this delicious recipe! There’s 3 part to these special cinnamon cupcakes. You have to create the cake mix, add in the cinnamon swirl to create that cinnamon roll flavor, and top with a delicious cream cheese frosting.
Ingredients for the Cinnamon Swirl
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp cinnamon
Ingredients for Vanilla Cupcakes
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 stick unsalted butter (room temp)
- 1 cup sour cream
- 4 eggs (room temp)
- 2 tsp vanilla
Ingredients for Cream Cheese Frosting
- 1 pound of cream cheese (room temp)
- 2 sticks butter (room temp)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar
How To Make Cinnamon Roll Cupcakes
Making cinnamon roll cupcakes is easy, but you do have a bit of ingredient to use. Follow the instructions below and you’ll see how much baking these cupcakes are worth when you are enjoying them!
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- In a large bowl, combine your flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the sour cream to your cake mix.
- In a separate bowl, you will add the butter, sour cream, eggs, and vanilla one at a time.
- Beat all ingredients together until smooth.
- Mix all the ingredients together.
- Add your swirl cinnamon mix into each cupcake. Making sure you swirl around in your cake batter.
- Bake for about 17-19 minutes and until a toothpick comes out clean.
How To Make Cream Cheese Frosting
This is literally the topping of the cake! I love making my own cream cheese frosting rather than using a premade one. There’s such a difference in the cream cheese flavor when you make your own at home!
- Beat butter and cream cheese on medium until smooth.
- Add the vanilla and mix, slowly adding your powdered sugar. Continue to mix until smooth.
- Frost your cupcakes as long as your cupcakes are completely cooled.

These look so good! Just want to confirm something the use of a cake mix in the recipe. I don’t see it in the list of ingredients and yet it is in one of the steps. No doubt it just got left out, but just wanted to be sure! Can’t wait to try it!

Hi Joy! I think I just mixed up the steps. You are making a homemade cupcake mix recipe, but you could use a cake box to create this recipe as well. Just skip all the steps to make your cake mix and just go straight to adding the sour cream to the mix 🙂 Hope that helps!
