When I asked the girls individually what they wanted to be when they grow up so that I can get an idea of what book we should pick for our monthly Poppins Book Nook theme, I got the same answer from both. Great.. easy! The only thing is that instead of getting a regular answer like a doctor, vet, or even teacher, I got “I want to be a princess when I grow up”! Now… who am I to crush their life long dream! So, Princesses it is!
We have basically read every Princess book that we probably own, but especially Beauty and the Beast and Princesses Glitter Storybook. When I asked the girls what they wanted to make for our craft they both jumped up with excitement and told me they wanted Princess Crowns. Although, they do have a few princess crowns, they are always creating their own with construction paper, so I thought we could make ones with felt so that they would last for more than just a day. They chose Princess Belle and Princess Aurora, which I was kinda surprised, especially with the Frozen craze going on in this house.
Now, I’m pretty crafty but I knew that I didn’t have much time to create everything myself so I did a quick search for princess crown template and found these fun adorable princess crowns from Cutesy Crafts. These were perfect and exactly what the girls wanted. I went ahead and used her templates for our crowns, but we made our own no sew version of them 🙂 I do sew and I have a machine, but honestly I really didn’t want to take everything out. Plus this gave the girls a chance to be apart of the making.
Materials Needed:
- Crown template
- Felt (colors depending on the princess, we used yellow because both Belle and Aurora wear yellow crowns)
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Jewels
- Thin elastic
After printing out the template I cut it out and laid it over the felt piece, which I folded. I attached the paper with pins so that it would be easy to take off once the felt was cut into the crown shape.
We then cut the felt piece out and then using a hot glue gun I attached one corner of the thin elastic. We then glued the crown together all the way around, except the other end where the other piece of elastic would go. I then put the crown on the girls to measure how long the elastic needed to be. Don’t glue it shut yet, this way you can leave the crown flat for decorating.
I then brought out some jewels and let Kaelyn decorate her crown anyway she wanted. I helped her out a bit, just because we used the hot glue, but you could also use craft glue and it would stay put pretty good. Once she had decorated her crown I then attached the last piece of elastic and glued the crown shut.
For Belle’s Crown it was basically the same steps. The only difference is the felt rose we made. The rose is super simple and looks harder than it is. You basically cut out a flower looking swirl and then roll together until you have a rose. Make sure to glue as you are rolling to keep the rose from unraveling. Then I let Kaidence decorate her crown with diamond jewels.
The girls then had a Princess Tea Party using their new Felt Crowns. They have been wearing their crowns all month and I have to say that they are holding up really good!
Yeah, she’s not dramatic at all 😉
I’m really glad I let the girls go with this months theme. Usually I would have guided them in another direction, but this was really important to them and to me they are still so young that having this kind of imagination and positive look into the world is okay with me. We also talked about how princesses are respectful, clean after themselves, listen to their mommy’s and daddy’s (hey I had to take advantage of this opportunity). So, I think it was a great lesson for them to learn and who knows… maybe they will grow up to marry a prince and become princesses!
