When I began homeschooling my girls, this is the kind of experience I always wanted them to have. Hands on learning and family memories to cherish all of their lives! Visiting Old Salem Museums & Gardens in NC has done exactly this! It’s been almost a year since our visit and both of my girls still share their trip with family and friends!
We were invited as guests of Old Salem Museums & Gardens and Visit Winston-Salem. No other compensation was provided and as always all travel learning opinions are our own. #VisitWS
Visiting Old Salem Museums & Gardens in NC
You must be asking, if it was so awesome why wait to share it? Now, that’s a good question! You see, life kinda got a bit busy in 2015 and lots, lots happened. With that said, I really wanted to make sure that I shared our amazing experience to Winston-Salem, North Carolina!
If you are a family who loves adventure along with learning about history, then this is an amazing place for you to visit. As a homeschooling family not only did my girls learn hands on about the Moravians and how they lived, but my husband and I did as well!
History At Its Finest
We were all surprised to see everyone dressed up as the Moravians did many years ago. I really does make the scene and take you back in time. While doing the tour, you follow your map which tells you the history of each building you are visiting. Some are actually owned and have families living in them.
All of the buildings are in working matter and what I mean by that is that the farmer, the tailor, the potter, and the baker are all working away as they normally would have so many years ago as you do your tour. Now that’s what I call hands on learning!
A New Experience
We got to experience an entire new world while visiting the Old Salem Museums & Gardens! We even got the chance to ask questions and have one on one conversations with the Moravians.
I loved when my oldest daughter asked in one of the houses why their was only one bed if they had children. The answer was simple, the parents slept on the bed while the children slept on the floor. Her reaction… PRICELESS!
Delicious Authentic Southern Food
We also had to pick up some yummy Moravian cookies and freshly baked garlic rosemary bread! I really do wish I had bought more of that bread, taken it home and froze it! It was absolutely delicious and because they cook so natural we didn’t have to worry about them using peanuts in anything, so our oldest daughter got to experience it all!
A Tavern Experience
We also had the opportunity to have lunch at The Tavern in Old Salem, which serve Moravian dishes and it’s still owned by the family. We actually got the chance to speak with the son who now runs the restaurant, who shared a bit of the history.
The staff is dressed in authentic Moravian clothes, which my girls completely loved! The young lady who attended us, Victoria was so sweet and wonderful answering all the questions that we all had!
Preserving The Past
My favorite part was that they use all locally grown items to create their dishes. How amazing is that? We ended up taking a few orders of freshly baked corn bread back home with us. Well, they didn’t really make it back home, but they sure were delicious as a snack on the car ride home!
As you can see we had an amazing, historical time that we talk about still to this day. Plus, check out some of the other fun things we did in Winston-Salem, NC!
Old Salem will be celebrating it’s 250th anniversary celebration, so make sure to check out their website and if you find yourself driving by North Carolina my family and I highly suggest stopping by for an afternoon of history, culture, and wonder! Website and Facebook page, which I myself visit on a weekly basis!
