I hope you  had a chance to join us last month for our Kids in the Kitchen theme! My girls absolutely love cooking and baking with me, plus it’s such a great learning activity. This month we are taking it To the Laboratory! Science can be so much fun and there are so many different amazing books out there to help for home experiments! This month we are going To the Laboratory: Volcano Eruption Science Experiment!

To the Laboratory Volcano Eruption Science Experiment!

For this months Poppins Book Nook we decided to use one of our favorite Science books, Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Experiments!

Materials needed to create your Erupting Volcano:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • A bottle or small container with a wide bottom – we used an old baby bottle and in the classroom I used to put two styrofoam cups together and make a whole on the top.
  • Red food dye (optional)
  • String
  • Toilet paper
  • Playdough if you want to make it look like a volcano

To the Laboratory Volcano Eruption Science Experiment! Materials needed

Step One: The first thing you are going to want to do is create your volcano. You can create a volcano using dirt just like Dad’s Book of Awesome Science Ideas share or we used playdough, which is what I always used in the classroom when we created erupting volcano’s.

We used a craft bin that way we contained all of the wonderful fun mess in one area, making easier for mommy to clean 🙂 Set your vase, cup, or bottle in the middle of your plastic container and cover it with playdough to make it look loke a volcano. I really let the girls create it mostly on their own and just helped molding the top to make sure that the volcano would be able to erupt.

Step Two: Pour some baking soda on a few sheets of toilet paper and using your string tie it together. It will look like the picture below. Also, make sure that it’s small into to fit through your bottle or containers nozzle on the top.

In the past I have just poured the baking soda directly into the volcano

Step Three: Add some vinegar to your bottle and have your child insert their toilet paper filled with baking soda into the top until it drops in. Make sure to have them stand back, this is the messy part 🙂

As you insert the baking soda into the container just watch your volcano erupt right in front of you! So much fun! We tried the first one using the string and toilet paper, but after that we just kept adding vinegar and baking soda into the volcano to make it erupt. The girls really had tons of fun taking turns adding the ingredients.

To the Laboratory Volcano Eruption Science Experiment! In action

As you can see the girls had a fun time Erupting Volcano’s! I think we might have finished the entire bottle of vinegar 🙂

Here’s a short video showing you exactly what happens when you mix the vinegar and the baking soda together! I apologize for it being a bit blurry 🙁

Hope you enjoyed this months To the Laboratory: Volcano Eruption Science Experiment!
