Science Experiment with Oobleck {Celebrating Dr. Seuss}

To keep celebrating Dr. Seuss this week, we did a science experiment with Oobleck!  This is one of my all time favorite gooey and sticky experiments to do and one of the easiest.  I bet you have everything you need to do this right now at home.  All you need is some cornstarch, water, and some food coloring if you want to make it green like Bartholomew’s Oobleck.

The first thing we did was read Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss on our iPad and then we began with our experiment.  I want the girls to think about the story so when we are playing with our Oobleck I can ask them questions.

Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cup of corstarch
• 1 cup of water
• 8 drops of green food coloring

I honestly thought that I had more cornstarch when I started to prepare for our activity and the girls were all ready to go, so I had to improvise when it came to measuring.  Usually I would do about 1 1/2 cup of cornstarch and about 1 cup of water, but you can really just add as much cornstarch as you want and then keep adding water until you have the perfect consistency of gooeyness 🙂  I had about 1 cup left, so I added about 1/2 cup of water to it with 8 drops of green food coloring.  Add the food coloring before adding your water so that you can see the color change.

You want your consistency to be runny when you tip the bowl to the side, but feel solid when you dip your finger to the bottom of the bowl.  But I warn you… once you start playing with it you may not stop!  It’s that much fun and amazing the way it melts in your hands!

Kaelyn had a wonderful time with our Oobleck, in fact I had to bribe her to finally get her to put it away before dinner.  By this time she had green hands!

Kaidence on the other hand dipped her fingers in her Oobleck and was done 🙂  This girl does not like getting dirty!

Now, go ahead and make your own Oobleck!  Don’t worry… I won’t tell how you waited for your kids to go to bed to play 😉
