Throughout the holiday season we have spent time with our family members and eating lots of amazing food. Even though it’s a new year and I should be thinking about what diet I should be starting, I’m actually thinking on how I can spruce up my family traditional recipes to include some of our favorite everyday ingredients, such as the Quaker® Oatmeal Squares with a hint of Cinnamon.

Flan with Quaker® Oatmeal Crunch Topping Recipe

That’s when I decided that our traditional Puertorrican flan recipe could use exactly that! So I decided to create a traditional Flan with a Quaker® Oatmeal Crunch Topping Recipe. This way I know that when my family is enjoying a delicious piece of dessert they are also getting a source of calcium, fiber, and protein!

All the ingredients needed to make your own Flan with a Quaker® Oatmeal Crunch Topping can all be found at your local Walmart store. I found the Quaker® Oatmeal Squares down the cereal isle and they also offer several other flavors such as Brown Sugar, Golden Maple, Honey Nut, and Cinnamon which is the one I used for this recipe.

Quaker Oats Cereal

Ingredients for Flan: Recipe is enough for 1 large flan or 2 small flans

  • 1 cup of sugar (for caramel)
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of vanilla
  • 6-8 large eggs (the more eggs you add the firmer your flan will be)
  • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cans evaporated milk
  • Tin foil

Ingredients for topping:

  • 1 cup of Quaker® Oatmeal Squares with a hint of Cinnamon Cereal (crushed)
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons of melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Quaker Oats Square Topping for Flan- Caramel

Step One:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

The first thing you are going to want to do is make your caramel for the flan, because we need it to set before we add the flan custard. You can either do this on the stove top or the microwave. Personally I’m all about easy and quick, so I use the microwave when making my caramel. Pour your 1 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water into a microwavable bowl. Give it a bit of a stir just to make sure that all the sugar is wet. Microwave on high for 6 minutes and 30 seconds OR until you see your caramel turning brown. You don’t want it too dark, but you need it to be a beautiful brown color.

Step Two:

Once your caramel is ready you need to pour it into your baking dish. Remember, if you are making 1 flan pour the entire caramel into the pan, but if you are making 2 smaller flans divide the caramel between both pans. Carefully, make sure that the caramel covers the entire bottom of your pan. I even like to get some on the edges as well.

Set these to the side to set while you make your flan mixture.

Step Three:

Add all your eggs in a bowl and mix for about a minute. Add the rest of your ingredients to your eggs and mix until everything looks nice and smooth. Slowly pour your flan mixture into your caramelized pan and cover with tin foil.

Now this is the tricky part. You need a larger pan where you will set the small one in. Place your small pan which has your flan in the larger pan. Carefully pour hot water into the larger pan (NOT into the flan pan) about half way. The entire thing now will go into the oven at 350 degrees for about an hour and a half.

To make sure that your flan is completely cooked just insert a toothpick right in the middle of your flan. If the toothpick comes out clean you are good to go. If the toothpick comes out with custard then add back into the oven for another 15 minutes.

Quaker® Oatmeal Squares

Step Four:

While your flan bakes go ahead and get your topping ready so that it has time to cool and crunch up.

My girls love helping me in the kitchen so this is one of the things that they love to do. I added the cup of Quaker® Oatmeal Squares Cereal into a large zip block bag and using a rolling pin they crush all of the cereal. It’s okay if you have larger pieces.

In a microwavable bowl melt your 4 tablespoons of butter. Pour your crushed up Quaker® Oatmeal Squares Cereal, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and the 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon into your melted butter. Using a fork stir around making sure that everything is mixed and well coated.

Step Five:

Once your flan is done you will want to take out the small pan from the water and allow to cool for a bit. Place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

The best way to transfer your flan into a platter is to place the platter on top of your flan and flip over. Wait a few seconds to make sure all of your caramel transfers as well.

Now it’s time to add some amazing crunch to your flan with your Quaker® Oatmeal Squares Cereal crumbs. Using a spoon scoop up some of your crumbs and sprinkle all on top of your flan.

Now you can enjoy your delicious Flan with a Quaker® Oatmeal Crunch Topping!

I can think of so many different ways I can use my Quaker® Oatmeal Squares Cereal for snacks. I think they would also make a great coating for my homemade chicken tenders which my girls absolutely love! I love trying out new things and I especially love being able to use ingredients that I already have at home and my girls love to have for breakfast. It definitely makes it a lot easier on this mama when dinner time rolls around.

That looks delicious. I’ve never made flan, despite my heritage. This one’s going into the “COOK!” folder!
