5 Tips To Get The Kids Involved In Spring Cleaning
My girls love to help around the house, but the problem is that the enthusiasm doesn’t last very long. That’s why I have to be smart when getting them to help clean and do chores, especially during springtime. Spring cleaning in our home is a collaborative effort that everyone must help with. That’s why I make sure to make spring cleaning with the kids fun and easy.

How To Get The Kids Involved In Cleaning
First things first, heading to the store with the girls to pick up any supplies needed for a good clean! We headed to our local Walmart store where I know that I will be able to pick up everything that I need starting with Viva® Bill Roll Paper Towels, Cottonelle®, and Scott® 1000 bathroom rolls to get our spring cleaning on a roll (literally) and hopefully get my girls on board!
Tip 1: Get The Kids Involved
Kids don’t understand how important it is to keep the home clean and how spring cleaning is the perfect time to get this started. Allow your kiddos to tag along while you go shopping for everything needed to clean your home.
Allow them to pick products with you and even make it into a game as I Spy! As we are going down the paper roll isle I tell my girls “I’m looking for something I use to clean and it begins with the letter M”, they then go up and down the isles looking for the product until they find a mop! Whoever finds it and brings it to me first gets a point. At the end of the shopping spree, they both get to pick something from the $1 section and the person with the most points gets to choose 3 songs they want to be played during cleaning time (more about that later).
Tip 2: Create Non-Chemical Based Cleaners
One of the things that I hear parents tell me all the time is that they don’t want their kids cleaning, because they don’t want them to come in contact with chemicals. I completely understand and agree! That’s why I create my own nonchemical based cleaners that I allow my girls to use to wipe tables, chairs, and windows. I love creating cleaners with essential oils and vinegar, making it safe for even my girls to help with cleaning. Check out some of these essential oils cleaning recipes.
Tip 3: Turn Up The Music
Seriously, how can you clean without busting out the music!? Not me that’s for sure! Now, this is when tip one comes into play, whoever got the most points while shopping for cleaning supplies gets to pick 3 songs to be played during cleaning. My girls love this because they both have different taste in music. While my youngest would choose Disney anything, my oldest is all about Megan Trainor or The Greatest Showman.
In between breaks do a little dance off. Making it fun and enjoyable will make your kids want to help out more often when they hear the music is cranked up!
Tip 4: Create Cleaning Essential Baskets For Each Child
My girls love to have their own things, so I create special cleaning caddy’s for them. Depending on what chores they are doing I fill their caddy with those essentials like paper towel products, homemade glass cleaner, and re-usable towels. You can easily create any type of cleaning caddy for your kiddos, the idea is to get them excited about having their own supplies.
Tip: I like to have at least three caddy’s available for us to use. I then add the products they each need individually for that specific task. This way you stay on a budget, but you can easily swap products as you or they need it.
Tip 5: Positive Re-enforcement
With anything that we do with our kids, I believe that positive re-enforcement is as important. After a long day of spring cleaning why not have a special treat after dinner or even watch a family movie before bed. You don’t have to go out of your way or spend money, just a simple token that shows them how appreciative you are that they got involved and helped out.
I can guarantee that your kiddos will be wanting to do spring cleaning all year long with these fun spring cleaning tips. In reality, kids love helping out. We just have to figure out what motivates them to do so and that all depends on their age as well. You want cleaning to be age-appropriate and fun.
